If you are just looking for a few general pictures of termites, then there are five above on this web page. If, however, you are looking for pictures of termites for a specific reason, say in order to identify a species, then you will have to either get a book with pictures of termites, search further on the Internet, or try some of the links on this site, but read on first...

Pictures Of Termites

The most obvious reason for wanting pictures of termites is to be able to identify an insect you have seen walking around your property that you fear might be a dangerous species of termite - dangerous to your house that is. However, there are over 4,000 different types of termites and only about 10% of them are dangerous to your property.

It is so difficult to differentiate between some of the species, that experts in insects (entomologists) can only tell some of them apart by the size of the mouth-parts (mandibles) of the soldier class of the termite. In cases like this, pictures of termites are not likely going to be of much use to you.

Having said that, not all 4,000 species exist in every country. Termites like warmth: some like it hot and dry and others like it hot and damp, while yet others are subterranean, living deep in the earth.

If you find a termite, and by the way, they are often called 'white ants', although they are not related to ants at all, you should look for evidence of feeding on the wooden structure of your building and be on the look out for more of the insects. If you see a line of them behaving just like ants, then you probably have a termite infestation.

You are witnessing the female worker termites going out to bring back the bacon or, in their case, bits of your house to feed the nest.

In this case, rather than hunting for pictures of termites in order to try to identify them yourself, why not take your own photos of your insects to show an expert? Better still, get a piece of clear plastic sticky tape and dab up a few of them and then fold the sticky tape back over them so that they are held fast from both sides.

Now, if you want to try to identify them yourself from pictures of termites in a book or on the Internet, you have a specimen to compare them with. If, on the other hand, you just want to get rid of your termites as quickly as possible, take your photos and your sample down to the local pest controllers and ask their advice. If you do not have a pest control firm locally, the council should have someone who can identify your insects and tell you whether you have a problem or not.

Some termites will swarm like flying ants, so if you see a cloud of 'flying ants' one evening, you may have a problem already or one may be just be about to begin. Use the same tactic. Knock one down or give the cloud a puff of fly spray and get a specimen between sticky tape to show an expert. It really is not worth you trying to identify termites from pictures of termites, leave it to the experts
